Chapter 9

“But he refused to come at the game!” Tyler laughed, “He was just padding his stats! It was ridiculous!”

“What do you mean, mate?” Donny asked.

“We were killing these cats. It was like 33 to 9 at half time. And all their points come from free throws!”

Kang smiled, folded, his arms, stretched out his legs and proudly announced, “But I still had a triple double!”

“But it’s not legit! You was playing against scrubs! Coach was so mad he couldn’t talk! He kept trying to send James in to replace him, and Kang kept waving him off. I thought coach was going to call security!” Tyler exclaimed, to laughter from the table.

As everyone got up to leave, Eve tugged Tyler’s sleeve. Tyler dapped up Kang and the other guys. “Check you cats at practice,” He told them, before leaving with Eve.

Eve and Tyler walked down the hall holding hands, “So what do you think about Langston Hughes now?”

“My bad. You were right. That cat is deep. How did you know I’d like him?”

“You have an intelligence and passion about you that reminds me of his poetry.”

“You…you really think so?”

“Tyler, you’re amazing. And don’t let anyone tell you different.”

“Eve, you are amazing. I have never met anyone like you. You got a brotha reading poetry. My boyz going to think I’m going soft.” Tyler laughed.

“Would that be bad?”

“No, Eve. No, it wouldn’t.”

“Hey, can you have dinner with me and my family?”

“Sure, but it’s going to be tight until after basketball season.”

“I know. It’s just that my crazy sisters were talking about you the other night and now my mom and dad want to meet you. Ana lied and said you were my boyfriend.”

“So, I’m not your boyfriend then?”

“Well, I mean... I don’t know... It’s just that my parents are so strict. I guess…”

“No, its cool, Eve. I understand. I get it. But I probably won’t be able to make dinner until after basketball season.”

“But we usually eat late, so you can come over after practice.”

“Eve, Eve, it’s not that simple. After practice I have about an hour to catch the last express train to the city. If I eat at your house I’ll miss that train.”

“How about the weekend?”

“The weekends are no good. Mom’s finally got that second job. I’ll be watching my sister. Plus I told Harold I’ll help him get his car running this weekend.”

“Who is Harold?”

“Harold. The janitor. We used to ride the train together sometime. He lost his job here last week. I promised to help him with his car so he can look for jobs off the train line.”

“The janitor at this school?”

“Yeah, Eve. We talked about him. Cool, older cat. He comes to all of my games.”

“OK, I remember that. Well, how about catching a later train?”

“You know how far I live? And if I miss that express train it would take me over three hours to get home on a regular train.”

“Tyler, this shouldn’t be that hard. Is something else going on?”

“Eve look… I would
